Curriculum Vitae & Vision
Statement
- French Professor at Randolph-Macon
College for 27 years
- Currently serving as FLAVA's Interim
President Elect.
- Other FLAVA positions held include many
standing and ad hoc committees
- Co-President of Virginia AATF and many
other offices & leadership positions
- Several review and licensure committee
positions
- Presented at workshops
We are fortunate to have such a dynamic
state-wide language organization which is
committed to the support and promotion of
world languages and their cultures at all
levels of instruction. Through its various
committees, The Foreign Language
Association of Virginia recognizes and
rewards excellence in foreign language
teaching and service, advocates policies
and programs at the local and state levels,
and works with regional and national
organizations to support foreign language
education. However, it is the annual
conference where FLAVA provides the
greatest support to foreign language
teachers. The many excellent sessions
offered at the conference each year allow
teachers to stay abreast in their field, to
reflect on issues of importance to language
instruction such as standards of learning,
assessment, advocacy and promotion and
perhaps most important, to discover
effective and creative teaching ideas which
reinvigorate them when they return to the
classroom.
While the work of all of FLAVA's
committees is extremely important, one area
to which I would particularly like to
devote myself next year, if elected, would
be the effort to bring more university and
college faculty into the FLAVA fold.
Increased collaboration with higher
education faculty could bring more
resources and new ideas. It would also
create an opportunity for greater dialogue
with respect to articulation between
various levels of language instruction.

My vision for FLAVA is quite simple. As a
prospective conference coordinator, I feel
that it is a necessity to keep all members
informed of the work of FLAVA and to
produce the best program sessions possible
at our annual conference. Communication is
vital to all strong organizations, and for
members to be notified of due dates,
events, etc. in a timely fashion is
critical. Conference sessions are dependent
primarily on the participation of FLAVA
members, and hence, all members should be
encouraged to share their expertise with
others. Nothing is more exciting than
walking away from a conference with ideas
and suggestions to use in your classroom
the following week!
